Competition History

In 2007, a request was made by Mick Thornton (Livestock Manager – Teys Lake Creek), instigated by Geoff Teys, to gauge the interest that could be mustered in holding a carcase competition to be run in a similar manner to the very successful Biloela Carcase Competition, but hosted at the Teys Lakes Creek plant.
The last Prime & Carcase Cattle Competition had been held in Rockhampton in 2001 after the Rockhampton City Council directed the demolition of the fat cattle yards at Rockhampton Showgrounds, signalling the end of the fat cattle competition that had been conducted with the Rockhampton Show since the late 1940’s. This meant that Central Queensland’s cattle producers no longer had an avenue to show their commercial cattle, compete with their peers and receive valuable feedback on their carcases.
A group of like-minded cattle producers gathered to discuss the idea of forming a new carcase competition and the enthusiasm generated saw the birth of the Central Queensland Carcase Classic which held its first competition in 2008 in association with the Teys Bros Lakes Creek abattoir.
In 2010, after much discussion, the Council agreed to the use of some of the old Rockhampton Show trophies for use in the CQ Carcase Classic with the winners names engraved back to the inaugural competition held in 2008. The trophies are awarded as follows:
• Redbank Trophy: Champion Grassfed Carcase
• Joan Farmer Memorial Trophy: Champion Grainfed Carcase
• Chas P. Ward Trophy: Champion Grassfed Pen
• James Lawrence Cup: Champion Grainfed Pen
Each year the CQ Carcase Classic accumulates commission monies for various local beneficiaries including the P & C Associations of Capricornia School of Distance Education, Clarke Creek, Dingo, Mackenzie River and Marlborough, Ridgelands Show Society and ICPA Capricornia Branch of the Air. In 2018, Epilepsy Qld was added as a beneficiary.
Since 2008, $118,663.48 has been raised.
